ESR13 experimental position with Krassimir Velikov: Shape Anisotropic Colloidal Particles in Polymer-Surfactant Systems
Unilever R&D Vlaardingen (URDV) is one of Unilever’s main central research laboratories, with a focus on soft condensed matter and colloids in relation to food, personal care and household care products. URDV supports brand innovation programs, based on scientific and technological capabilities. The Soft Condensed Matter (SCM) group of the Faculty of Science at Utrecht University is part of the Debye Institute for Nanomaterials Science. The focus of the group is the study of the behaviour of colloids in external fields, such as electric, shear flow, gravity, and (structured) walls, and this fundamental knowledge is used in the design of functional smart materials. This group designs and studies colloids in the interdisciplinary context of chemistry and physics, and uses a range of experimental methods (such as light/X-ray scattering, real space analysis using confocal microscopy, self-assembly, optical characterisation, scanning and transmission electron microscopy and spectroscopy) as well as computer simulations.
Currently we are looking for an early stage researcher, a PhD candidate, to work on the roles of polymers and surfactants on dispersion properties and stability of shape anisotropic colloidal particles.
We are looking for a self-motivated outstanding experimental physicist or (physical-) chemist at the MSc level with an interest in soft condensed matter physics, colloids and mechanical properties of soft materials. A proven affinity or experience in using particle characterisation methods, and rheological and light scattering experimental techniques for characterisation of dispersion based soft condensed systems speaks strongly in your favour. We seek a self-motivated, curious and pro-active candidate with excellent communicative and organizational skills.
Terms of employment
The candidate is offered a full-time position for 3 years at Unilever R&D Vlaardingen which will extended by 1 year at Utrecht University (UU). After successful completion of the research a PhD degree will be granted at the UU. Several courses are offered, specially developed for PhD-students. UU assists any new PhD-student with housing and visa applications and compensates their transport costs and furnishing expenses.
